Everyone is entitled to my opinion II
by Mike Ganino,

                          President - APWU Of Connecticut

A suggested course to combat the numerous problems that beset us and those in the making could begin with the manner in which we opposed the utilization of Sears etc., as "post offices".

In front of each and every post office in this country should be stationed numerous brothers and sisters with fact sheets about the manner in which the postal service is destroying "OUR" business and the means and methods that we believe can change that.

At a minimum we must "let the sun shine in" on the mismanagement and outright theft that we unfortunately have come to know. The boodoggles, mis-mal feasence must be publicized as we need to change the manner in which the postal service is (mis)managed.

Those who "lead" the USPS must be shown for what they are. We can no longer afford the luxury of NOT taking our "leaders" on when their only goal is destruction of OUR livelihood.

For those who believe that this will only make the problem worse - you are just fooling yourselves. We must take the bull by the horns by goreing those who wish to make us their fodder.

Petitions to sign might be in order but maybe this time we could provide a form letter of some sort with a self addressed stamped envelope addressed to the particular congressperson in that district and the appropriate senator.

Our members must be provided the information that will allow each and every one to formulate their own letters to their respective congressperson and senator.

When proposed AMP hit us last year our president, Mike Dennehy set up meetings with our local legislative body and our legislative director, Mel Fogel, formulated and presented a motion that was unanimously adopted by the city body and mayor that amongst other things enjoined them with us in bring a law suit against the USPS for diminished services.

During the time of the proposed AMP both Brother Dennehy and me along with national apwu legislative director, Roy Braunstein, and brothers from California went to our congressional reps and senators to provide an "in your face" explanation of the problems.

Brother Braunstein and Myke Reid were great assets in that battle and I would expect no less this time around.

In my opinion, we are long overdue for a congressional rally in Washington that would bring in thousands of postal workers to go one on one with our elected reps.

Utilization of State organizations in our battles would be a great plus.

In Connecticut we are blessed with great local presidents (and locals) that mobilze on a moments notice - picketing etc.

Finally, this continuing battle promises to be not only our biggest fight but could also be our greatest organizational tool.

If the non-member won't come out and fight for their own job and that of their brothers and sisters - this would ultimately mark them in the eyes of the bargaining unit and I believe they would become ostracized something that probably is not happening at this point.

Brother Burrus has had great foresight (contract extension) and I believe that he will be more forthcoming to suggestions, such as those enumerated above.

Know this will sound crazy but it hit me like a ton of bricks!

The "failure"? of ENRON has brought about so many massive investigations by untold numbers of congressional, watchdog groups and the entire press jumping on board you can't keep track of who is who. The reason - MONEY, lots of MONEY - lost, stolen or whatever.

HEY - what about the "failure" of the UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE?

Have you wondered WHY the USPS has NOT been investigated in the same manner??????

The loss of money is so staggering it is beyond comprehension! The money spent on failed mechanization, automation, bonus dollars due to mis/mal feasence is OUT OF SIGHT and if I may say so CRIMINAL!!!!!

Of course all the while - WE allow MANAGEMENT to utilize the work force (bargaining unit) as "whipping boys".

Every grand scheme thrown out by our Postal "leaders" offers cuts here and cuts there - that directly affect the lives of the bargaining unit, but not those who have brought us to this crossroads.

We, the bargaining unit is targeted for anything and everything ....... yet

The people who have caused this massive hermorage continue to "lead" and control our's and the Postal Service's destiny.

There is complete and warranted outrage when we learn that the "management team" that destroyed ENRON received millions in bonus dollars - but not a peep when we confirm that the "management team" that continues to destroy the USPS has received upwards to a BILLION in bonus dollars.

Now if this is the "end" of the USPS and if many of US continue to be targeted for oblivion than it may behoove us ALL to:

MAIL a letter to your congressional leaders and ask for investigations of the USPS that mirror those of ENRON.

DEMAND the removal and change of USPS "leadership" beginning with those in Washington.

HIGHLIGHT the boondoggles that exist - which cost the taxpayer (US) BILLIONS of dollars.

TELL THE PUBLIC how managerial and postmaster staffing cost the USPS near 2 BILLION dollars per year

SUNSHINE must be let in on the USPS - as long as 'they' continue to operate in a clandestine manner - no change will come about.

To those who say that going to the press, demanding investigations, marching, picketing will only destroy the USPS you are WRONG.

The stench that eminates from the USPS is from the dead carcass! The buzzards circling will rip off the most profitable pieces of "flesh".

Those who "lead" the USPS are looking out for their own self-interest and that includes the Board of Governors who have "danced the two step with the devil" allowing the slow but steady destruction of the constitutionally mandated USPS.

Many of the "private's" looking for entree into the USPS are lead by OUR former leaders who took the "golden handshake", now giving US the golden shaft!

Someone (60 Minutes or 20/20) must be interested in looking at HOW the losses have come about!

What we do well is to investigate and document. Lets utilize our strengths to ferret out the postal "carpetbaggers" by showing what the REAL problems are.

It has become readily apparent that our eggs do NOT rest in the same basket as those of our postal "leaders"!

FIGHT for your job! FIGHT to save the best postal service in the world.

What was once considered trite is now a truism!!!!

The job YOU save WILL be YOUR own!!!
